Brighton Holiday Flip Book

The 2019 Brighton Holiday card was a flip book that told a story centered around Brighton’s 30th anniversary.

In order to fulfill the Creative Directors’ vision, I strategized how to build the set and photographing more than fifty people across multiple set themes over the course of a week. Knowing the scenes had to later be blended into a finished narrative, I worked closely with the Creative Directors to adjust the story and photo sequences to make scene transitions more seamless. Prior to the shoot, I had made an 8′-tall “30” for a previous Brighton celebration. These oversized numbers were utilized in the shoot as the central focus around each scene.

To keep the book affordable and stay within postal service regulations, the finished 6″ x 4″ book was limited to 42 pages. In order to maximize the number of frames in the flip book story, we rolled the book 180° horizontally at the end of the first half to give us 81 frames. This allowed the viewer to continue the story without having to switch hands or change the orientation of the spine.

Using the finished print files, I brought the assets into Cinema 4D and After Effects to create an animated video of the book for online viewing. The wonderful sound design by Nate Hershey brought it to life.
